IAFF Convention Ride August 2008

Updated On: Jul 25, 2008 (06:45:00)

All IAFF Motorcycle members and non motorcycle members are coordually invited to join Local 1908 members on Saturday August 9, 2008 for a breathtaking ride through the scenic mountains of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Motorcycle rentals will be available at the Las Vegas Harley Davidson Dealers. The discounted rate at HD will be $125.00 and bikes are based on availability. The only requirement is that when picking up the bike(s) the member must show FD or IAFF ID for the discount to be applied.

The ride will start at the Local 1908 Headquarters and take you through the scenic Spring Mountain range. The highest point of the Spring Mountain Range is Mount Charleston, at 11,918 feet. You will escape the heat of the valley floor into the higher elevations and the limestone cliffs, tall pine trees and abundant fresh air of Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon. The temperatures are generally 20 to 30 degrees cooler and it is a refreshing break from the higher valley temperatures. There will be a stop at the Fox Tail Canyon picnic area (approximately 7000' elevation), where refreshments will be provided.  The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard resort is only a few miles further up the road where you can stop and enjoy the views.

The ride then takes us to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.  Red Rock showcases a set of large red sandstone peaks and walls. The walls are up to 3,000 feet high, making them a popular hiking and rock climbing destination.  The scenic loop, however not an official part of the ride, is a beautiful 13 mile one way road loop that takes you closer to the red rocks and is an option if you choose to take an extra 30 minutes.  There is a $5 fee to enter the loop.

We will end the ride back at Local 1908 Headquarters where lunch will be served. All motorcycle ride participants will be required to sign a waiver prior to participation. Click here to download the waiver form.

Additional ride information will be available in the event that you choose to continue your ride through and around the surrounding areas of Las Vegas. We look forward to seeing all of our Brothers and Sisters in August 2008 at the 49th Biennial Convention.

“The IAFF-MG ride through South Dakota and Colorado seemed the most appropriate place to debut the bike,” says Spain. “Who better to see it first than my fire fighter family?”

“I grew up around bikes, riding for the first time when I was eight,” Spain says. “It wasn’t long before I decided to open my custom bike shop -- SNL Scooters.” SNL is derived from the first names of Spain and his wife – Scott and Linda.

SNL Scooters offers custom design and building. For more information, click here.

Nearly 40 motorcycle riders from Indiana, Michigan and Illinois participated in the Tiny Adams Memorial Ride, held in conjunction with the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana’s (PFFUI) fallen fire fighter memorial service on August 10, 2007, in Indianapolis.

IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger joined the riders as they left Brownsburg, Indiana, and rode approximately 30 miles to the site of the Indiana Police and Fire Memorial near the state capitol building in Indianapolis.

This year’s event went off without a hitch,” says Dennis Swan, IAFF-MG 8th District Coordinator.“But, I am already thinking about how to make next year’s ride bigger and better. In fact, I am hoping to make it a two-day ride.”At the close of this year’s ride – sponsored by IAFF-MG, PFFUI and Hendricks County, IN Local 4406 – seven names were added to the memorial, three of them professional fire fighters.

Tiny Adams, the ride’s namesake, was a member of Muncie, IN Local 1348. After he retired, Adams continued to fight for issues important to fire fighters as a state representative. He died in 2005.
